2012-02-07  Man Cut Free After Car Leaves Motorway

Fire crews from Garforth, Stanks and Gipton were called to an incident on the M1 southbound carriageway between junctions 46 and 47 on Sunday morning after a car left the road. One person had to be cut from the car and was taken to hospital by air ambulance  

 

2012-02-07  Joan and Michael’s Wedding Anniversary

Joan and Michael Howson of Westbourne Avenue, Garforth celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary this Wednesday. The couple were married at St Marys Garforth in the bitter winter of 1947 and there was 6 feet of snow on the ground on their wedding day. Michael worked at Barnbow for 47 years

A new Head Teacher, Mr David Eaton, has been appointed at East Garforth Primary School. Mr Eaton will start after the Easter holidays.  

 

2012-02-05  Garforth Clinic Reprieve

Local councillors have received reassurances that Garforth Clinic will remain open until alternative provision can be provided in Garforth. The decision follows strong objections from local residents regarding the possibility of moving the facilities out of the town.  

 

2012-02-03  Television Debut for Iraq Film

A film directed by Leeds based Mohamed Al Daradji and co-written by Jennifer Norridge from Garforth is set to make its television debut on BBC4 on Sunday evening. The film, Son of Babylon, is set in Iraq shortly after the fall of Saddam Hussain. It has won over 30 awards including Best Film at the Raindance Film Festival in London.

Garforth Town have crashed out of the West Riding County Cup after a 1-0 defeat at home to Farsley FC. Farsley will now play holders Guiseley in the semi-final  

 

2012-02-01  Christmas Success for Lions Charity

Garforth and District Lions collected over seven thousand pounds from the local community in the run up to Christmas. President Ken Woodhead praised the generosity of the local residents.  

 

2012-01-31  Coroner’s Inquest into Cyclist’s Death

A coroner’s inquest in Leeds has heard how a thief left a cyclist to drown in a canal, taking his bike and riding away on it, his explanation being that he thought – wrongly – that the rider was already dead. The cyclist, 51-year-old retired banker Michael Houghton, died four days later in hospital. The inquest was told that Mr Houghton, a father of three who lived in Garforth, regularly rode along the towpath. It is not known what caused him to fall into the canal, although the inquest heard that alcohol was found in his system.

There have been one burglary, one garage burglary and one theft from a shop recorded by Garforth Police in the last seven days. Two cars were stolen from the house burglary so police are reminding residents to o keep your car keys safe and out of sight at all times.

Garforth Town FC host table topping AFC Fylde at Genix stadium today in their Evo-Stik First Division North clash. Garforth have risen to just one point off a top five position after a good run in the league with wins against several top sides in recent weeks.
