Garforth Town FC’s home League Cup game against Staveley Miners’ Welfare on Tuesday evening was postponed following at 12.30 pitch inspection. The field had not recovered from the drenching it had received over the last few days.

2016-02-10   Inspirational Visitor

The former Papa New Guinea, Hull KR, Huddersfield Giants and Bradford Bulls player Stanley Gene visited Sherburn High School to give a talk about his beginnings in rural Papa New Guinea and the sacrifices he had to make to succeed at the top level in his sport. Stanley also delivered two fantastic rugby sessions to the Y9 and Y11 students. The school was pleased to be able donate some old sports kits to Stanley's Foundation, which helps to support the communities in his home country.

2016-02-09   Stop And Search Advisors

Members of the public can join North Yorkshire Police officers as they stop and search people in the street. Under the Stop and Search Lay Observer Scheme, members of the public can accompany officers on patrol when they might use their stop and search powers, as a way to increase transparency. Applicants will need to be vetted prior to being approved for the scheme, and a number of other restrictions apply, which are outlined on the application form.

The Brigshaw High School Careers Fair is to be held at Brigshaw on Tuesday the 23rd of February. Pupils and parents can meet exhibitors including Universities, Colleges, Employers, Opportunity Providers and Careers Advisers. Universities will also be giving delivering presentations. Exhibitors will be present from 4pm until 7pm 

 

2016-02-08   It’s Better by Train

According to figures published by the Office for Rail and Road the footfall figure for South Milford railway station was up from 117,282 in 2014 to 131,058 in 2015, a big increase of 11.7 percent. At Sherburn station footfall also increased from 42,546 to 44,254, an increase of 4.1 percent.

Sherburn Eversley Cricket Club is looking for more players. In season 2016 Sherburn will be fielding 2 Saturday teams and one Thursday evening team. The first eleven will be playing in the 2nd Division after gaining promotion last season. Indoor nets are being planned to start Feb/March. 2016-02-05   Police Warning Over Bogus Calls

The Police have become aware of a fraud circulating targeting elderly and vulnerable members of the community. Some older people have received telephone calls from a caller who purports to be from their GP surgery and is asking for an appointment to discuss the persons mobility needs. During the appointment, the older person is persuaded to buy mobility aids which are either unnecessary or inappropriate and always expensive. If you receive a call like this, please check with your GP surgery first before agreeing to a visit.

2016-02-04   Speed Checks for Aberford

The police report that speeding is still a problem in Aberford village and they will be carrying out speed checks. The Parish Council has asked the police to look into obstruction problems caused by inconsiderately parked cars, blocking drop down kerbs or obstructing footways and making life difficult for people with prams, pushchairs or in wheelchairs. Becca Lane and Highfield Road were highlighted as problem areas. 

 

2016-02-04   Plan for Four Homes

A planning application has been submitted to demolish two properties in Church Close Micklefield and construct four terraced homes in their place. The application is pending consideration. 

 

2016-02-03   Three Bodies in Allerton Bywater

The bodies of three people have been found by police at a property in Beeston Way at Allerton Bywater, after concerns were raised for the occupants. The area has been cordoned off and enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Detectives investigating the murder of a woman and two children are liaising with police in North Wales following the discovery of a man's body on cliffs in the vicinity of South Stack, Anglesey. 

 

2016-02-03   Inaugural Calendar Success

The first ever Sherburn Calendar has raised £770, which has been donated to the Peter Pan nursery. The calendar, which sld out by November is a community collaborative effort, initiated by the Community association, judged by the Camera Club, designed and printed by Creative Shed and bought by residents of Sherburn.  

 

2016-02-02   Sherburn Improvements Get Go Ahead

Selby District Council has granted planning permission for Sherburn Parish Council’s application for the planned improvements to the village centre. Weather permitting, work will commence at the beginning of 2016. The area of improvement is from Tesco down to HSBC Bank and the wall around Selby District Council’s car park. It will include planters, seating and improved paved area. Every effort will be made to cause as little disruption as possible to the everyday routine of the village. It is hoped to coincide completion and opening of the new centre with the passage of the Tour de Yorkshire through Sherburn, at the end of April.

2016-02-01   Attacked Man Remains Critical

Four men have been charged in relation to an attack that left a Sherburn man in critical condition. The victim was assaulted in late night attack on 27th December.Two of the charged men are from Sherburn and aged 34 and 26. Two others are from the Leeds area and of 28 and 29 years. The 27-year-old victim sustained serious head injuries during the attack and has remained in Hull Royal Infirmary where his condition is described as critical.

2016-01-30   MP Welcomes Apprenticeship Figures

Local MP Nigel Adams has welcomed new figures showing 4,930 new apprenticeships have been started by people in Selby and Ainsty since 2010. This local growth in apprenticeships has been part of a wider increase, with 323,310 started in Yorkshire and the Humber since May 2010, and over 2.6 million new apprenticeships across England

2016-01-29   Burglars Caught on CCTV

Police investigating a burglary in Ledsham have released CCTV images of four men who were caught on camera breaking into a garage at a house in Great North Road, Ledsham, at about 11am on Thursday, November 5, last year. They stole a John Deere X300 sit-on lawnmower worth £4,000, a child's blue and white Suzuki LT50 mini quad bike and a green 5-tonne log splitter. They loaded the items into the back of a white Ford Transit van and drove off. Micklefield in Bloom group are planning to clear an area next to the school and are looking for volunteers to help weed the area. The work will be carried out on a Saturday morning in March, the date has to be agreed. Anyone wishing to help should turn up on the day, with gloves. 

 

2016-01-27   Miners’ Half term Soccer School

Garforth Town FC are running a soccer school during the half term break. The course will run from 10am to 3pm on 16th to 18th February and costs £12 a day or £30 for the full three days. Boys and girls aged 5 to 11 are welcome. Just bring your trainers, suitable clothing, a drink and your lunch. 2016-01-26   MP Calls for Farmer Compensation

Selby and Ainsty MP Nigel Adams is demanding that compensation should be paid to farmers who store flood water on their land and lose uninsurable crops as a result so that homes are protected. He will be holding meetings with the local Internal Drainage Board and ministers to discuss the issue. Meanwhile, Defra have said that a range of options were being considered as part of the government’s Flood Resilience Review announced last month and the outcome is expected in the summer.

2016-01-25   Attempted Burglary at Sherburn Factory

Police are investigating an apparent burglary attempt at an office supplies firm in Sherburn. Officers were called after a group of men were seen trying to break in to the property on Sherburn Trading Estate by attacking and removing brickwork with blunt implements. The offenders failed to make their way into the building because of a number of large pallets of paper stacked behind the wall. The offenders fled the scene before the arrival of the police.

Garforth in Bloom group are looking for new members. If you can plant, dig, weed or water then come along to the first dig of the year, meeting at the Jubilee Garden at 9.30am on Thursday 4th February. The group meets on the first Thursday and third Sunday of each month. Volunteers very welcome 

 

2016-01-24   Lowest Crime Rate in Country

Crime Statistics for England and Wales in year ending September 2015 have placed the North Yorkshire Police area in the top position as the lowest crime location in England. There were a total of 35,615 crimes in North Yorkshire giving a crime rate of 44.2 per 1,000 of the population.  

 

2016-01-24   Weapons Amnesty Till End of Month

West Yorkshire Police are staging a high-profile weapons surrender which runs from Wednesday 20th January to Saturday 30th January. Members of the public will be invited to hand in any weapons they hold, including firearms, ammunition, knives and offensive weapons, to one of seven key police stations throughout the county. During the campaign those surrendering firearms, ammunition knives and other offensive weapons will not face prosecution for simply possessing these weapons and they may wish to remain anonymous. 

 

2016-01-23   Academy Comes Out on Top

Official figures from the Department of Education show that Garforth Academy had the highest proportion of pupils achieving the GCSE benchmark of 5 or more A to C grades including English and maths of all the secondary schools in Leeds. Eighty percent of the 307 eligible students achieved the benchmark grades.

Leeds City Council has installed a new ecofriendly biomass boiler at Lotherton Hall. A new boiler house has been built in the old laundry room and the white ash produced by the boiler will be used as fertiliser around the estate 

 

2016-01-22   Park and Ride at Junction 45

A 1,000 space park and ride facility is planned for Temple Green, which is located over the A63, south of the Temple Newsam estate / at junction 45 of the A1-M1 link. A £7.5m programme of infrastructure and ground engineering is currently underway and it is anticipated the facility will be operational in April 2016.

The Glencoe playground between Great Preston and Kippax is being upgraded and refurbished at a cost of £121,000. The work is being carried out by Groundwork Leeds and is jointly funded by Outer South East Housing Advisory panel, LCC Outer East Community Committee, section 106 monies, Groundwork and Housing Leeds.

2016-01-20   Man Jailed for Dangerous Driving Death

A 74 year old driver who caused the death of Sherburn man Paul Sprakes when his car was in collision with Mr sprakes’ mtorcycle, has been jailed for five years. Car driver America Barbacane attempted to overtake two cars on a blind bend and hit Mr Sprakes, who died in the collision. Mr Barbacane was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving by a jury at York Crown Court.

2016-01-19   Man attacked Outside Pub

Police are appealing for information after a man was assaulted outside the Gaping Goose public house around 11pm on Saturday 9th January. The assault happened after an argument in the main bar. Two men aged 49 and 30 have been interviewed in relation to the attack. Anyone who witnessed the assault or the argument is asked to contact the police on 101 

 

2016-01-19   Experts Giving Free Flood Advice

Garforth Flood Support Group and the Flood Advisory Service are holding a flood advice roadshow in Victoria gardens and the Town Hall till Thursday this week. Officers from Leeds City Council officers will also be on hand to advice on the financial support available to those affected by the recent flooding.  

 

2016-01-18   Academy Cup Run Ends

Garforth Academy Year 9’s English Schools Cup dream came to an end after losing out to Gosforth Academy 5-1 in the last 32 of the competition. Garforth lost three key players during the warm-up before the game and despite this were only trailing 2-1 with 8 minutes to go. Unfortunately, pushing forward for the equaliser in the closing minutes left them vulnerable to Gosforth’s counter attacks. 

 

2016-01-18   Cinema Plan for Thorpe Park

Developers have been given the green light to build a 2000 seat cinema at Thorpe Park. The cinema is part of a 300,000 sq ft shopping and leisure complex planned for the business park. The developers are in discussion with cinema operators who have expressed an interest in the development. 

 

2016-01-17   Drink-Drive Arrests Up 20 Percent in North Yorkshire

Eleven people from the Selby area were arrested this Christmas as part of an annual crack-down on intoxicated drivers. These include 56 year-old South Milford man, Anthony Sambidge, who has been ordered by York Magistrates Court to pay £375 in fines and charges and was banned from driving for 18 months. He provided police with a breathalyser reading of 70 micrograms per 100ml of blood, the limit is 35micrograms.

Garforth Town’s match against Barton Town Old Boys on Saturday was called off after the pitch failed a 10.30am inspection. A new date for the match has still to be announced 

 

2016-01-16   Man Falls Onto Motorway

A man was taken to hospital on Friday after plunging from a bridge onto a motorway near Garforth. The man, in his 50s, fell from the footbridge onto the southbound carriageway of the M1 near junction 46 just before 10am.He was said to be conscious and talking by paramedics who transported him to Leeds General Infirmary. The air ambulance also attended the scene. A number of lane closures followed the incident.

The next Aberford Parish Council meeting will be held on Tuesday 19th January at the Oriel Room, St Ricarius Parish Church, and will start at 7.30pm. 

 

2016-01-15   Councillor Asked to Step Down

Garforth and Swillington ward councillor Andrea Mckenna has been asked to stand down when she comes up for re-election this May. The Garforth and Swillington branch of the Labour Party passed a vote of no confidence in her at a recent meeting. If she does not stand down the local branch can refer the matter up the Labour party ladder with a view to have her removed. Councillor McKenna was fined £120 for misuse of a disabled person’s blue badge in September. Subsequently a council officer allegedly tried to get the parking ticket cancelled.

2016-01-14   Manhunt Called Off

A claim made by a Kippax schoolgirl that she was attacked has turned out to be a false alarm. The 10 year old girl had claimed that she was grabbed by a man and pulled into a ginnel at the junction of Brigshaw Lane and Tatefield Grove. Investigation by specialist police officers established that the girl was mistaken and the alleged incident never took place

A planning application has been submitted to change the use of 1 Lidgett Lane, Garforth from a residence to a solicitor’s office.  

 

2016-01-13   Lidl Exhibition Hours Extended

As a result of public interest in the Lidl exhibition at the Miners Welfare Hall on Friday 15th January the organisers have agreed to extend the exhibition till 7.30pm. The main hall is booked until 6pm but they have taken the upstairs room from 6-7.30pm.  

 

2016-01-13   Plans for Lots of Houses

Developers have submitted plans to build more than 1000 homes on the south west corner of Garforth and Swillington ward at Skelton Gate. The site which is close to Swillington could eventually accommodate 2700 houses. If Council plans for Garforth are also progressed developers could build 5000 additional houses in the ward over the next 15 years. The plans for Skelton Gate, submitted by Templegate Developments, are being considered by the Council 

 

2016-01-12   Robber Jailed for Four Years

A robber who stole £1200 from the Nisa store on Main Street Garforth last December has been jailed for 4 years. Luke Kirkley of Barley Hill Road in Garforth, threatened the shop assistant with an imitation gun and took the cash from the till. The robbery was caught on CCTV and Kirkley left a fingerprint behind on the shop counter. He was arrested 2 days later. The fake gun was found in his house and a charred till tray was found in the garden. 

 

2016-01-12   MP‘s Anger at Local Landowner’s Actions

Selby and Ainsty MP Nigel Adams has issued a strong statement following the decision by Samuel Smith’s Old Brewery not to grant permission for a temporary footbridge across the Wharfe on their land adjacent to Sainsburys. He is calling for the brewery to reconsider its decision, stating it is outrageous and completely contrary to the community spirit shown by town residents and businesses since the Boxing Day flooding. 

 

2016-01-11   A Lidl Exhibition

There is a public exhibition on Friday 15th January regarding the proposed new Lidl store on the Miami site on Aberford Road Garforth . The store is expected to create 40 new jobs. The proposal will include two additional retail units and a family pub on the site. The event takes place at the Miners welfare Hall from 2pm to 6pm.

Garforth and District Lions have given new sponsored kit to the recently formed Garforth Rangers girls under 9 football team. The girls play in the West Riding Girls Football league.

2016-01-09   Keith Wakefield OBE

Labour Councillor for Kippax and Methley, Keith Wakefield has been awarded an OBE in the New Year’s Honours List. The former Leeds City Council leader is currently chairman of the transport committee at West Yorkshire Combined Authority. He was first elected to Leeds City Council in 1988 and receives the recognition for political service and services to local government. 

 

2016-01-09   Roadworks on Ninelands Lane

There will be roadworks on Ninelands Lane between Church Lane and Long Meadows from 18th January to 28th February. Traffic lights will be in operation to control traffic. The work being carried out is to lay a new 33,000 volt cable

The Garforth and District Lions Christmas Santa collection in Garforth and surrounding villages this year raised a total of £8,573. All the money raised will support local good causes 

 

2016-01-08   Hillam Village Meeting

The will be a village meeting on Monday 11th January at 1015 am and 7.30pm at the Cross Keys Pub Hillam. The main topics of discussion will be the volunteers needed to keep Hillam News going, residents’ views on putting a defibrillator into the phone box in the square, the future of the Ring Tree, which has been diseased for some years and any other village issues. 

 

2016-01-07   Citizens Forum in Great Preston

A Garforth and Swillington ward community meeting for people who live or work in Garforth, Swillington, Great Preston and Little Preston will be held on 25th February at 6pm in Bowers Allerton Chapel Hall, (Bowers Row) Queen Street, Great Preston. The meeting will be chaired by Councilor Andrea McKenna, with her ward colleagues, Mark Dobson and Stuart McKenna, in attendance. 

 

2016-01-07   Graffiti Problem in Garforth

Police are looking for a graffiti vandal in Garforth. A number of residential and commercial premises have been targeted and the majority of Graffiti 'tags' left are made up of the letters 'KRONZE' in varying styles. If anyone has any information relating to these offences and / or the perpetrators please call the police on 101

Tony Hudson has been awarded the British Empire Medal in the New Year’s Honours List for services to the communities of Hillam and Monk Fryston. The British Empire Medal was reintroduced in 2012. The Miners home NCEL Cup tie against Staveley MW on Tuesday 5th January was postponed following a 1pm pitch inspection. A new date has not been announced yet 

 

2016-01-05   A Date with a Rhino

Garforth Tigers under 8s will be playing the half time match during the Carl Ablett Testimonial match at Headingley on Sunday 24th January where Leeds Rhinos take on Bradford Bulls. 

 

2016-01-05   No Damage in Churchyard

Police have received a complaint about damage to stones in St Marys Churchyard Garforth. Officers have visited the site and established that no damage has occurred. The stones are slipping as a result of age, the recent rain and work being carried out by the Council. 

 

2016-01-04   Reduced Hours at Kippax Leisure Centre

As result of budget constraints Kippax Leisure Centre will be cutting the number of swimming sessions available. In 2014/15 the leisure centre was losing £2.40 per visitor, a total shortfall of £265,000 a year, met by council subsidy. An analysis of attendances has enabled the council to identify for termination those early and late sessions that were not cost effective. The changes take effect this January and will be reviewed every four months going forward.

2016-01-03   Miners Rained Off Again

Garforth Town FC’s home game on Saturday against Liversedge in the Northern Counties East Premier League was hit by the wet weather and postponed following a pitch inspection. A revised date for the game has to be decided.

Garforth Library is hosting a Children’s Craft Club for children of all ages every Monday from January 4th to March 7th. The club is free and runs from 3.30 to 4.15pm. Contact 0113 2243291 for more details.  

 

2016-01-02   Supporters of Aberford Village Hall

Aberford Parish Council is looking for Supporters of Aberford Village Hall. Supporters will be a group of people willing to provide advice or help, on an ad hoc basis, as and when their skills, knowledge, and time allow. A Supporter will receive more frequent email updates on plans for the hall, together with a summary of activities to which they may be able to contribute advice, expertise and/or time. If you are willing to become a Supporter please email AVHall@outlook.com and let them know if you have any particular ways you may be able to help, e.g. building expertise, building maintenance, painting, building a website, helping with grant applications, marketing, fund raising, general help, etc. 

 

2016-01-02   Latest Health Walks List

The list of Leeds Health Walks for January and February is now available. Follow the link in the right-hand column for details. All walks will be easy-going and approximately 3.5 to 4 miles in length, unless otherwise stated. Some may include off-road walking and involve the use of stiles. Please wear suitable footwear and bring waterproof protection (raincoat or umbrella). All walks are free and there is no need to book, just turn up  

 

2016-01-01   Post office Demolition Plan

A planning application has been submitted to Leeds City Council to demolish a former post office building in St Aidan’s Road Great Preston and build two new detached houses. The application is pending consideration 

 

2016-01-01   New Camping Equipment for Sherburn Scouts

Persimmon Homes Yorkshire has given the 1st All Saints Sherburn in Elmet Scout Group a £1000 donation. The money will be used to to buy new camping equipment for the group.

2015-12-31   Lotherton Hall Closed for New Year

Lotherton Hall will close at 1pm on 31st December. It will be closed on New Year’s Day and re-open again on 2nd January 

 

2015-12-30   Man Attacked by Gang in Sherburn

A man is in a critical condition in hospital after being attacked by a gang in Sherburn. The 27 year old man was walking along Hungate Road when a car pulled up in front of him and a group of men got out and assaulted him in the early hours of Sunday morning. 

 

2015-12-30   Beware of the Floods

West Yorkshire Police have issued a reminder about the flooded roads around within the Leeds area. In the Outer East area Fairburn Ings, Ledston, Allerton by Water, and parts of Castleford still badly flooded and the clearly marked Road Closed signs are there to warn and protect the average road user.

Prime Minister David Cameron and local MP Nigel Adams visited Church Fenton yesterday to witness first-hand the extent of flooding in this area 

 

2015-12-29   Miners Boxing Day Washout

Garforth Town’s Boxing Day home game against local rivals Tadcaster Albion in the Northern Counties East Premier league was called off due to a waterlogged ground after a 10am pitch inspection. The game has been rearranged to Tuesday 9th February 2016, kick-off 7:45pm.  

 

2015-12-28   Playground Refurbished

The children’s playground at Firthfields, East Garforth has been given an £80,000 facelift with new play equipment and surfacing installed as well as a set of 5-a-side goal posts and trim rail equipment for children. The facilities have been provided by the Council using Section 106 development money. 

 

2015-12-28   Flooding Closes Local Road

The A656 Ridge Road to Castleford has been closed at Allerton Bywater due to the flooding of the rivers Aire and Calder 

 

2015-12-27   Brigshaw Rugby Success

Brigshaw Year 7, Year 9 and Year 10 Rugby teams all qualified for the Champions Schools Tournament this term with the Year 9s reaching the 3rd round and narrowly losing out to Winifred Holtby 20-16. All 3 teams also qualified for the Leeds Schools Finals. The Year 10s played Corpus Christi winning 14-10, Year 7 rugby team also faced Corpus Christi in their final, winning 24-4 and Year 9 took to the pitch against Morley, in a repeat of last year’s final, winning 14-10 in a close game 

 

2015-12-27   Yorkshire’s Finest Fruit and Veg

Hillam based Bert’s Barrow’s has won the Deliciously Yorkshire and Yorkshire Post’s ‘Yorkshire’s Finest Taste’ award with their £15 fruit, veg and salad box. A team of judges drew up a shortlist in August and the awards were presented later in the year. 

 

2015-12-26   Burglars in Kippax

In the last week there have been a couple of attempt burglaries in the Kippax area where the offender has tried to bend the door handle back but has failed to gain entry. If you see anything suspicious please call the police straight away. If you think a burglary may be ongoing please call 999 

 

2015-12-26   Bloomin Good Fair

The Garforth in Bloom Christmas Fair on Saturday 5th December was very successful and raised nearly £600 for the group 

 

2015-12-25   Clinic to Close

Garforth councillor Mark Dobson is calling on NHS chiefs to rethink plan to shut Garforth Clinic on Lidgett Lane. Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust has approved the closure and says patients will be able to access the same services nearby in Kippax, Halton and Seacroft. Around 450 patients will be affected by the closure.  

 

2015-12-25   Plumber’s Van Robbed

A plumber’s van was broken into and various pieces of equipment taken in Micklefield on Tuesday night. The van was parked on Great North Road opposite the plumbers shop.  

 

2015-12-24   Don’t Drink and Drive

North Yorkshire Police have now made 74 arrests for drink and drug driving since the launch of Operation Attention at the beginning of the month. A police spokesman said "We continue to appeal to members of the public that if they know of someone driving under the influence of drink or drugs - please contact North Yorkshire Police on 101 or report anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111."
